Catherine Bush began playing piano at a young age, and by her mid-teens had composed over 200 songs. Her talent caught the notice of David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) who assisted in arranging her contract with EMI. The first song she released, “Wuthering Heights”, soared to #1 in England in 1978, making her the first British female to achieve a number one with a self-composed song. Since then Kate has achieved a notable career as a singer and musician.
She has managed to avoid being boxed into a strict genre due to her sharp changes in style, and her ever-increasing control over the production of her work.
Her second biggest commercial success came with the release of Hounds of Love in 1985, an album which, due to its original, and both quirky and pop quality, is regarded her masterpiece by many.
As Kate’s career has continued, she has gained a reputation for being “the Greta Garbo of Pop”, by shunning the spotlight. This has led to many misconceptions about Kate being a recluse, when in fact, as Kate put it, “I was really taken away from making music, which was a very difficult thing to come to terms with. I was spending more of my time doing interviews, promoting, traveling, doing televisions. I started thinking “hang on, I’m doing this instead of making music and what I want do be doing is making music” so, I really had to take a hold of that”.
A 12 year gap between The Red Shoes in 1993 and Aerial in 2005 (dedicated to taking a well deserved break, starting a family, and working on Aerial), has made Kate’s fanbase very patient… and very excitable. Kate continues to write and make music, and in 2011 released Director’s Cut, a reworking of two of her previous albums. No doubt causing countless heart-attacks worldwide, she then released a second album in 2011 of new material titled “50 Words For Snow”. There are rumours she is now working on another new album.
